• General Motors (GM) is preparing to launch an advanced "eyes-off" driving system in 2028 which will allow drivers to take their hands off the wheel and eyes off the road on highways using a combination of lidar, radar, and cameras for perception…also beginning next year GM will introduce a conversational AI assistant powered in its vehicles, enabling drivers to interact with their cars naturally like a passenger for personalized vehicle support and enhanced experiences

• The U.S. national debt officially surpassed $38 trillion for the first time in history…this marks an increase of about $500 billion this month alone, which breaks down to roughly a $23 billion rise per day

• The U.S. Treasury has imposed sanctions on Russia's two largest oil companies, with hopes to degrade Russia's ability to fund its war in Ukraine and pressure Moscow to agree to a ceasefire

• The ongoing U.S. government shutdown has now entered its 22nd day, officially becoming the second-longest in American history, surpassing the 1995–96 Clinton-era closure

• North Carolina's Republican-controlled Legislature has passed a new congressional map designed to give the GOP an additional House seat ahead of the 2026 midterm elections

• President Trump is considering implementing broad restrictions on U.S. software exports to China as part of a strategy to retaliate against China's recent expansion of rare earth export controls, this plan would limit a wide range of products made with or containing U.S. software, including laptops and jet engines…read more here

• The U.S. military conducted its eighth strike against an alleged drug-smuggling vessel, this time in the eastern Pacific Ocean off Colombia's coast, marking the first such operation outside the Caribbean region…the strike resulted in the deaths of two individuals aboard the boat

• The National Hockey League (NHL) has signed a multi-year agreement with prediction market platforms Kalshi and Polymarket, making them the league’s first official prediction market partners

• Kansas City Chiefs player, Travis Kelce, has joined an investor group led by activist hedge fund JANA Partners to help revive Six Flags Entertainment following years of declining…the investor group holds about a 9% stake in the company and aims to improve theme park operations, marketing, and guest experiences

• Meta is cutting approximately 600 jobs within its artificial intelligence division, specifically affecting the Fundamental AI Research (FAIR) unit, product-related AI teams, and AI infrastructure roles

• Reddit has filed a lawsuit against Perplexity AI and three other companies, accusing them of illegally scraping massive amounts of Reddit user comments and data to train AI systems without permission

• More than 800 public figures, including Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, Prince Harry, and Virgin Group founder Richard Branson signed a statement calling for a ban on the development of AI “superintelligence” until there is broad scientific consensus that it can be developed safely and with strong public support
