🗞️Meta's push for AI "superintelligence"

What happened today 🇺🇸,

• Meta has announced the creation of a new artificial intelligence research lab dedicated to pursuing "superintelligence", with the goal to develop AI systems that surpass human cognitive abilities… the lab will be led by Alexandr Wang, founder of Scale AI

• Bloomberg reported today that U.S. Treasury Secretary, Scott Bessent , is a possible contender to replace current Federal Reserve Chairman Powell, however the White House has denied the report

• Senator Josh Hawley (R-MO) plans to introduce legislation to raise the federal minimum wage to $15 per hour in 2026, and further increase it to match inflation

• President Trump sent 700 Marines to L.A. amidst the riots, protests, and unrest that have been taking place since last weekend and the Pentagon has said that deploying the Marines and National Guard to L.A. is costing $134 million

• House of Representatives member, Mark Green (R-TN), announced he will resign from Congress after the House votes again on the major Trump administration policy bill, citing a private sector job opportunity as the reason for his resignation

• US & China have agreed in principle on the framework for new trade deal after two days of talks in London

• U.S. ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabee, has said that the U.S. is no longer pursuing the goal of an independent Palestinian state, per Bloomberg

• Starbucks is launching the "Green Dot Assist" a generative AI tool powered by Microsoft Azure, to help baristas with drink recipes, equipment troubleshooting, and store operations, starting with 35 U.S. and Canada locations in 2025…the AI aims to speed up service and improve efficiency

• Paramount Global announced that they are laying off 3.5% of their U.S. workforce , eliminating several hundred jobs as part of ongoing efforts to address declining linear TV revenues and a challenging economic environment

• DOW up .25% / S&P up .55%

• Uber has announced it will begin public road testing of fully driverless taxis in London starting in the spring 2026, partnering with UK-based autonomous vehicle company Wayve

• Russia launched a massive overnight drone and missile attack on Kyiv and Odesa, killing at least three people and injuring over a dozen…Ukrainian air defenses intercepted most of the 322 targets, but the strikes caused significant damage and fires, marking one of the largest Russian assaults on Ukraine since the war began
